New WDCC Brer Bear Collectible: “A Hankering for Hare”

Announced in May, a new Walt Disney Classics Collection figurine from Walt Disney’s Song of the South is joining the Summer 2011 releases. The new WDCC figurine features Brer Bear and is entitled “A Hankering for Hare.” This piece is designed to complement the Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit set released in 2010, entitled “Cooking Up a Plan” and “Last Laugh”, respectively. The three pieces form a scene from the Laughing Place animated sequence of Song of the South (you can watch the YouTube clip here).

“Galumphing and a bit bumbling, Brer Bear is Brer Fox’s bosom buddy, so when the crafty fox is ready to roast Brer Rabbit for dinner, the burly big guy is more than ready to dig in.”

The figurine measures 7.5″ high, and is plussed with a pewter fork and knife. It is sculpted by Patrick Romandy-Simmons, and has a suggested retail price of $185.00. It is currently available for pre-order from WDCC authorized dealers and will be released this summer. Special thanks to Brian Slatky for the news report!

New 2010 WDCC Song of the South Figurine Set

For the first time since 1996, this summer’s Walt Disney Classics Collection release includes Song of the South themed figurines. Entitled “Brer Fox & Brer Rabbit: Cooking Up a Plan/Last Laugh”, the set depicts Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox from the beginning of the Laughing Place sequence of Song of the South, in which Brer Fox is about to cook up Brer Rabbit. Interestingly, Song of the South isn’t mentioned at all in the official product description:

“Walt Disney loved the animal fables penned by Joel Chandler Harris in which clever Brer Rabbit constantly outfoxed crafty Brer Fox— but this time it looks like it’s the hungry fox who has the upper hand. But never fear, quick-thinking Brer Rabbit will have the last laugh. First brought to life through Disney animation, these fanciful folklore critters have been immortalized in the classic Disney Theme Park attraction Splash Mountain. These fun-filled sculptures are plussed with a bronze fork and pewter neck on Brer Fox and a pewter pole for Brer Rabbit.”

The set was sculpted by Rubén Procopio, and the suggested retail price is $225.00 for the set. The full Summer 2010 catalog can be viewed on the official Walt Disney Classics Collection web site. Thanks to Michael Damato for the news report!

New Song of the South Southern Series Pin Released

On September 15th, Disney released a new pin series in a salute to the American South. Each pin pictures a Southern belle and gentleman. Appropriately enough, one of the pins depicts Brer Bear, Brer Fox, and Brer Rabbit from Song of the South. Who’s the rabbit belle on Brer Rabbit’s arm? They don’t mention her by name, but I would suspect it’s Miss Molly, long-time “sweetheart” of Brer Rabbit seen in various Disney comics and books over the years. This would be the first time she’s appeared on a pin.

DisneyShopping.com Product Description: “Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear find the belle of the ball to be mighty satisfactual on this limited-edition Disney pin inspired by Walt Disney’s classic Song of the South. Imported”

The pin is limited to an edition of 250 and is available to order from DisneyShopping.com. The price is $12.95.

Two New Splash Mountain Brer Rabbit Pins Released

Disneyland Resort recently released two new Splash Mountain pins depicting Brer Rabbit released on Sunday, May 7, 2006.

The first pin features Brer Rabbit in a Splash Mountain log. Part of the E-Ticket Thrills Collection, this pin was a Gift With Purchase pin, available with each $20 purchase of pins or pin accessories at select Disneyland Resort locations.

The second pin depicts Brer Rabbit in the foreground of a pin-on-pin design with Splash Mountain in the background on a postage stamp. This pin, part of the Greetings from Disneyland Resort 2006 series, was limited to an edition of 1000 and retailed for $10.95.

Splash Mountain Pin and Sorry! Board Game Released

A couple of new Splash Mountain items were released recently. The first item, a limited edition Splash Mountain pin, is part of the “Piece of Disney History Collection” and features Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear in the Splash Mountain log. At the front of the log is a small plastic bubble that contains an actual piece of the fur from the Audio-Animatronic Brer Rabbit on the Splash Mountain ride. The pin is limited to an edition of 2500 and is available exclusively at Walt Disney World for $12.95. For more info and to see how this pin was made, visit the official Disney Pin Trading website.

Also released is a special Splash Mountain edition of the popular board game Sorry! featuring the Brer characters. It is available at Disney theme parks for $40 and comes in a collectible tin case. To my knowledge, this is the first true game (not counting puzzles) to feature the Brer characters since the original Uncle Remus Zip! marble game released in 1947.
