TCM Blog Discusses Song of the South

TCM Blog: Zip A Dee Doo DahThe official Turner Classic Movies blog, MovieMorlocks.com, has posted a blog on August  17th discussing Song of the South. Author David Kalat recently celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary at  Walt Disney World (congratulations!), when he “ran across an interesting paradox”:

You see, over the years, Disney has retired some rides because their source material was deemed too obscure (bye bye Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride), and even some that didn’t seem all that obscure got the axe to make way for attractions based on the latest releases (bye bye 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea).

Given this policy, the enduring popularity of Splash Mountain at the Magic Kingdom is something to marvel at, since the ride is based on perhaps the most obscure work in the entire Disney canon, Song of the South. Weirder still, Splash Mountain debuted in 1989, a few years after its source material Song of the South was decommissioned and mothballed. It would have been easier to just forget Song of the South ever existed–but there’s something about this film that is not so easily forgotten.

The full blog post goes into detail on the background and controversy surrounding Song of the South, and includes several screenshots of both the film and the Splash Mountain ride. There’s a good discussion going on in the comments section as well:

20th Anniversary WDW Splash Mountain Pin Released

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of Walt Disney World’s Splash Mountain. To commemorate this occasion, on July 5th Disney has released a limited edition pin featuring Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox.  It is limited to an edition of 1000, and retails for $11.95. SKU #6680426.

Splash Mountain is the theme park ride based on the animated sequences of Song of the South. Disneyland’s Splash Mountain was the first to open in 1989, followed by Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland in 1992. You can watch the grand opening video over in the Splash Mountain section.

More Details on Splash Mountain Video Game

As we reported last month, Disney released a brand new video game, Kinect Disneyland Adventures for the Xbox 360, on November 15th. The game is essentially a virtual Disneyland with interactive meet-and-greet characters (including all three Brers) and “mini-games” for each main attraction in the park (including Splash Mountain). Details were initially scarce, but now that the game has been out for a few weeks, we’ve got YouTube clips of the experience! Without further ado…

Part 1: The Briar Patch. The adventure begins with Brer Rabbit (voiced by the talented Jess Harnell) leading the player through a briar patch, collecting coins in the process. Meanwhile, a new instrumental rendition of “How Do You Do?” is playing in the background. Once the player has reached the end of the Briar Patch, they arrive at Brer Fox’s house. Brer Rabbit advises the player to hop into a nearby log floating in the river, while he delivers a “present” to Brer Fox and Brer Bear (a beehive full of angry bees).

Part 2: The Log Flume. Brer Rabbit hops in with the player, and off they go on their adventure, leaving a fuming Brer Fox and Brer Bear at the dock. This portion of the game has the player steering the log and trying to avoid obstacles while collecting coins. Meanwhile, Brer Fox and Brer Bear are scheming to get back at Brer Rabbit and hurling objects at them along the river bank. An instrumental rendition of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” plays in the background.

Part 3: The Barrel Run. Brer Rabbit and the player find themselves hurtling downwards into a water-filled cavern. They take some nearby floating barrels and continue on, dodging more obstacles including falling stalactites and swooping vultures, and of course collecting coins. In this segment, an instrumental version of “Everybody Has A Laughing Place” is playing.

Note: The YouTube clips shown above do not depict the full gameplay; namely, we don’t see what leads up to the waterfall, and we don’t see the game’s conclusion. You know one thing’s for certain though: Brer Rabbit triumphs! (Sorry, Brer Fox. Better luck next time.)

Meet and Greet Characters: Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and Brer Rabbit are also found outside Splash Mountain, in Critter Country. The following video clip shows the locations of Brer Bear and Brer Fox, and the entrance to Splash Mountain. Brer Rabbit is apparently an unlockable meet-and-greet character, requiring the player to first help Brer Fox lure him out of hiding.

So, there you have it! This is the Brers’ single biggest animated appearance since their cameos on the House of Mouse (2001-2003), and their first ever computer animated appearance. I was very pleasantly surprised to see them so prominently featured in the game, and I applaud Disney for not trying to further bury this maligned movie. Thanks to Nicholas Fleming for the news report!

Splash Mountain Characters’ Video Game Debut

In case you haven’t heard, Disney fans are abuzz with a brand new Disney video game in town. Kinect Disneyland Adventures is a truly virtual Disneyland for the Xbox 360, and I must say the graphics are quite impressive. There are many interactive meet-and-greet characters throughout the park, and all of the park’s main attractions are interactive “mini games”.

If you’re wondering, “Does that include Splash Mountain?” I am happy to report yes! Even Brer Bear and Brer Fox appear as animated meet-and-greet characters near Critter Country. On Song of the South’s Facebook page, Philip Marc shared with us a link to a YouTube video clip that briefly shows Brer Bear and Brer Fox, and the façade to Splash Mountain.

As the game isn’t scheduled for release until November 15th, details are still a little scarce, and I haven’t been able to find any screenshots or video clips of the actual Splash Mountain attraction. But, if the demos of other attractions are any indication, expect to see at least a few “Brer” cameos from the ride! More will be posted as soon as we get more info. It should be noted that this is the first time any characters from Walt Disney’s Song of the South have made it into a video game (that I’m aware of).

Kinect Disneyland Adventures is currently available for preorder on Amazon.com. The game requires a Microsoft Xbox 360 with the Kinect add-on.

Splash Mountain WDW Getting Lap Bar Restraints

Walt Disney World’s Splash Mountain logs have been redesigned, with the addition of lap bars. The photo to the right has been widely circulated and shows rider test dummies in place to test the new restraint system. According to StitchKingdom.com, the new lap bars and seating enforces 2 guests per row, at the cost of increasing launch times by 8 seconds per boat, and reducing potential ride capacity.

To date, there have only been two reports of accidents involving WDW’s Splash Mountain that I know of, both occurring over 10 years ago. The first incident, on November 5, 2000, happened when a 37-year-old man was killed as he exited his boat in the middle of the ride and was then struck by another boat. The second incident, on December 20, 2000, involved an elderly woman who was injured due to exiting the log too early at the loading area. I would guess this kind of thing happens fairly frequently; we just don’t hear about it until there’s an injury.

It should be interesting to note that this is not the first time that Splash Mountain’s logs have been redesigned. In 1989 when Disneyland’s Splash Mountain opened, the logs sat up to 8 people on a shared padded “bench”, which required some straddling. This design was changed in 2001, reducing the number of seats to 5, with individual backrests installed. The back of the log is now wider to accommodate larger guests, or two smaller guests sitting side-by-side. It will be interesting to see if either of the other two Splash Mountain attractions (Toyko or Disneyland) will receive similar lap bar restraints in the future.

The ride at Walt Disney World is set to reopen on Tuesday, February 1st. Thanks to Keith for the news report!

Two New Splash Mountain Brer Rabbit Pins Released

Disneyland Resort recently released two new Splash Mountain pins depicting Brer Rabbit released on Sunday, May 7, 2006.

The first pin features Brer Rabbit in a Splash Mountain log. Part of the E-Ticket Thrills Collection, this pin was a Gift With Purchase pin, available with each $20 purchase of pins or pin accessories at select Disneyland Resort locations.

The second pin depicts Brer Rabbit in the foreground of a pin-on-pin design with Splash Mountain in the background on a postage stamp. This pin, part of the Greetings from Disneyland Resort 2006 series, was limited to an edition of 1000 and retailed for $10.95.

Splash Mountain Pin and Sorry! Board Game Released

A couple of new Splash Mountain items were released recently. The first item, a limited edition Splash Mountain pin, is part of the “Piece of Disney History Collection” and features Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear in the Splash Mountain log. At the front of the log is a small plastic bubble that contains an actual piece of the fur from the Audio-Animatronic Brer Rabbit on the Splash Mountain ride. The pin is limited to an edition of 2500 and is available exclusively at Walt Disney World for $12.95. For more info and to see how this pin was made, visit the official Disney Pin Trading website.

Also released is a special Splash Mountain edition of the popular board game Sorry! featuring the Brer characters. It is available at Disney theme parks for $40 and comes in a collectible tin case. To my knowledge, this is the first true game (not counting puzzles) to feature the Brer characters since the original Uncle Remus Zip! marble game released in 1947.

New Splash Mountain 15th Anniversary Pins Released

On October 22, Disneyland Resort released four new Splash Mountain 15th Anniversary pins, two of which depict the Brer characters. The first pin, entitled “Paddle Wheel,” depicts Brer Rabbit aboard the Zip-A-Dee Lady, the large showboat seen at the end of Splash Mountain. What’s cool about this pin is that you can turn the paddle wheel! This pin retails for $12.50 and is limited to an edition of 1500.

The second pin, entitled “The Drop,” depicts Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear and Brer Fox all plummeting down the Splash Mountain plume, while Brer Vulture (a.k.a. one of the Boothill Boys) looks on. This same scene is pictured on many Splash Mountain publicity items from the early 90’s. This pin also has a neat feature, the log slides up and down. This pin retails for $10.50 and is also limited to an edition of 1500.

The other two pins, entitled “The Descent” and “The End”, depict Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. They are Open Edition pins and retail for $6.50 each. These pins are available at the Emporium, La Mascarade d’Orleans, the Plaza Pavilion carts, Greetings from California, P.T. Flea Market, World of Disney, and Mickey in Paradise.

Disneyland’s Splash Mountain Celebrates 15 Years

July 17 marked the 15th anniversary of Disneyland’s Splash Mountain, the popular water ride featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and all the other critters. Two limited edition items were issued to commemorate the event. The first item, released on July 1, was a commemorative watch featuring Brer Rabbit in front of Splash Mountain among briars that spell out “15”. The accompanying artwork is signed by the artist, Eric Scales. I was honored to be able to meet Eric in person when I picked up my watch. Special thanks to Andy Knobloch for making that possible! The watch was limited to an edition of only 15 and cost $200.

The second item, released on July 11, was a pin featuring Brer Bear hanging from the sapling trap (shown on right). His arm holding his hat is movable. The pin was limited to an edition of 1500 and cost $10.50.
