Splash Mountain Trivia
  • The hollowed out log at the peak of the mountain is called Chickapin Hill, which Brer Fox would use to look out for Brer Rabbit in Song of the South.
  • The idea for Splash Mountain was originally conceived by Imagineer Tony Baxter in 1983 during his morning commute in rush-hour traffic on Interstate 5.
  • Splash Mountain was originally going to be called "Zip-A-Dee River Run", but then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner wanted "Splash" in the name to tie in with promoting the film Splash (1984), distributed by Touchstone Pictures (owned by Disney). Mountain was added to tie in with the other "mountains" in the park (Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and the Matterhorn Bobsleds).
  • Disney CEO Michael Eisner wanted an animatronic mermaid added to the ride (to tie in with the 1984 film Splash). That idea was shot down by the Imagineers as it was completely unrelated to the storyline.
  • Disney Legend Marc Davis was both an animator on Song of the South, and also designed the Animatronics that appeared in America Sings and were repurposed for Splash Mountain.
  • Nick "Nicodemus" Stewart, the voice of Brer Bear in Song of the South, reprised his role for Brer Bear's voice in Splash Mountain.
  • The voice of Brer Rabbit is that of Jess Harnell, who has performed many other voices for well-known animated characters, including Roger Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Wakko Warner from the Warner Brothers' cartoon show "Animaniacs."
  • Disneyland Splash Mountain's Zip-A-Dee Lady showboat was the largest animated prop ever built by Disney at the time—measuring 50 feet long and 30 feet tall.
  • At the time of its opening in 1989, Splash Mountain's 52.5-foot flume chute was the largest of its kind.
  • Disneyland's Bear Country was renamed to Critter Country for Splash Mountain's premiere in 1989.
  • Before Splash Mountain existed, on the site was a cave with Rufus, a snoring bear, inside and a sign warning "Sleeping Bear - Quiet!" The soundtrack can still be heard in Splash Mountain during the ride as you pass by Brer Bear's house... now it's Brer Bear snoring!
  • To coincide with Splash Mountain's grand opening in 1989, the Brer Bar restaurant was opened in the 1902 John Colter Building adjacent to the ride, replacing the Mile-Long Bar which opened in 1972. The Brer Bar was closed in 2003 to make way for the Winnie the Pooh-themed "Pooh's Corner" sweets and gift shop.
  • The vultures that warn travelers as they ascend to the final drop are named The Boothill Boys. In their previous home in America Sings, the duo sung of "The End of Billy the Kid", which accounts for their undertaker attire.
  • Disneyland's Splash Mountain is covered with nearly 20,000 flowers, trees, shrubs and vegetables, spread over a 3/4 acre carpet of exotic grasses.
  • The gift shop next to Splash Mountain is called the "Briar Patch". It originally sold Splash Mountain merchandise, but now sells more generically themed park merchandise.
  • In 1992, a camera was installed on the final drop of the Disneyland ride to take guests' pictures. Professor Barnaby Owl's Photographic Art Studio was opened at the ride exit for guests to purchase the souvenir photos.
  • There are 180 optical sensors throughout the mountain to monitor the progress of the logs.
  • The Zip-A-Dee Lady showboat and a small mule cart are the only two major props in Splash Mountain that are not sculpted out of concrete (a special concrete mixture that Disney designers nicknamed "mud.")
  • On the Zip-A-Dee Lady showboat, there is a sign behind the fox just to the right of the paddlewheel that states: "Playbill - Capt. Andy Presents Song of the South in 3 Acts", a nod to Song of the South's three animated sequences on which the ride is based. This sign appears to only exist at the Disneyland, CA location.
  • Opening a Splash Mountain at Disneyland Paris was considered but eventually scrapped due in part to Europe's cold weather.
