Disney Removes “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” from Theme Park Music

The Academy Award-winning song “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”, the best known song from Walt Disney’s “Song of the South”, is quietly being removed from Disney theme parks music loops, including Downtown Disney and The Esplande. The song was originally played between the medley from “Frozen” and The Ballad of Davy Crockett.

According to an article by Brady MacDonald of The OC Register, Disney has released a statement regarding the removal:

The removal of the song from Downtown Disney’s background music is part of a continuous process to deliver an environment that features stories that are relevant and inclusive.

Disneyland has also reportedly removed two references to Song of the South from its Splash Mountain page. This would not be the first time that Disney has removed references from its web sites — several additional dead links from over the years can be found on the Song of the South Links page. I have kept them there for posterity.

Thank you to long-time follower Steve for the news report!

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Included in New Walmart Exclusive CD

Walmart will be releasing an exclusive DVD & Music CD 2-pack, which includes the 2-disc Platinum Collection Special Edition of Cinderella, and the CD entitled “10 Favorite Disney Classics”. Of special note is that “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” is likely one of those 10 songs. And how do we know that? Well, Uncle Remus himself is included on the cover! While this artwork is not new (it originates from the Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Sing-Along VHS first released in the late 80’s), to my knowledge this is the first time this artwork has appeared on another release. This set will be released on October 4th and is available for preorder on Walmart’s website. Thanks to Patrick Casey for the heads up!

New Rendition of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” on Disneymania 3 CD

On February 15, Disney released a new CD entitled Disneymania 3, which features 15 well-known Disney songs by current popular artists. Track 7 is our beloved “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”, performed by Aly & A.J. A sample of the song can be heard at Amazon.com.

In January of 2004, we saw the release of Disneymania 2, which also had a rendition of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” on it, performed by Stevie Brock. Thanks to “harleymanofutah” of the Song of the South Enthusiasts Group for the news report!

“Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” is unquestionably Song of the South‘s most enduring tune. It won an Academy Award for Best Song and has always been a mainstay in Disney’s music library. From Big Band to Disco to Pop, the song has been covered by dozens of artists over the decades.

“Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” Makes AFI’s Top 100 Songs List

The American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top movie songs of all time in “100 Years… 100 Songs“, a three-hour television special aired on CBS on June 22. 400 candidates were nominated, and jurors narrowed the list down to 100 songs. Song of the South‘s Academy Award-winning song “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” made the charts at a strong #47.

The fact that “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” made not only the top 100 movie songs of all time, but the top 50, speaks volumes. Disney has long exploited this song because of its enduring popularity, yet refuses to release the movie that made it so popular. Thanks to Mark Kratzner for the report.

“Disneymania 2” CD Includes New “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”

A new Disney CD entitled “Disneymania 2” slated for release on January 27 includes twelve classic Disney songs performed by contemporary artists: LMNT, No Secrets, The Beu Sisters, Hilary and Haylie Duff, They Might Be Giants, and others.

Of note in this compilation is a new rendition of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,” performed by Stevie Brock. A sample of the new song can be heard over atAmazon.com. Thanks to Mason for the report!
